Mike Duffy’s assertion that he actually received a second cheque has caused Stephan Harper a problem that the Prime Minister (PM) hadn’t anticipated. If Duffy has received a second cheque, and it can be proven by him, it sets off a scenario that will the PM will have great difficulty in explaining and his image and/or trust of him will be near impossible to recover from.
If Mike Duffy has recieved a second cheque the question arises did Stephan Harper know about it or not? If he knew about it, his act of ignorance makes him a liar, but if he didn’t know about the additional cheque it launches him into the stage of incompetence. Even if Stephan Harper wasn’t aware of the doings of his office’s chief of staff, Nigel Wright, surely, when the knowledge of the $90,000 cheque hit the media it would have provoked the Prime Minister to sit down his staff and ask what the heck was going on. Surely his staff would have been forthcoming and told him all the details of their dealings with Mike Duffy including the cheque for $13,000. This disclosure would put the PM into the liar camp.
The other scenario does not put the Prime Minister in any better light. If at the time of the $90,000 cheque coming forward, Stephan Harper did not sit his staff down it shows a gross incompetence on the part of the PM that will destroy any credibility of him as a competent manager of the Country. If Harper cannot manage the affairs of his own office, how then can he be capable of running the complexity of all of Canada?
My own view is that Harper is way too much a control freak to not have control in his office.
