Truth, Where Has it Fled
Without becoming preachy here, there is a scripture in the Bible that states a Truth, “and the truth shall make you free”. Few today even contemplate the idea of Truth, and in our chaotic times with societal beliefs of evolution and lessening thoughts of God it is hard to say if the West, as a culture or society believes in Truth. We have lost the absoluteness and the security that our ancestors once had when they believed in Truths. Much of that loss in our sure footing, as a defining moment, came about in 1965 when the New York Magazine had a cover that asked the question, “Is God Dead”. (Elton John had it wrong in his lyric, in Levon, when he wrote “ And the New York Times said God is Dead”. It was New York Magazine, not the newspaper the New York Times, and a question was proposed whereas Elton John made it a statement)
I remember the time, at least in a 13 year old mind, as the debate raged on in print and in the conversations. Quickly on the heels of the New York Magazine cover came the answer, Science will solve the World’s problems; to some it was agreed that science was to be the next god. I am still waiting for that, as scientists make conflicting statements over whether or not coffee is good or bad for you, or even in the debate of whethere milk is a good source of calcium for people. These debates over trivialities hardly inspires confidence that science will solve the more weighty questions of morals and ethics.
Then there is the short sightedness of science in creating the Atom and the Hydrogen bombs. Today we live with the craziness of Genetically Modified Organisms, where scientists are so confident in their own lunacy that they subject whole nations of people to wheat and corn that has not gone through the riggers of testing before it came main stream and all alternatives have been vanquished.
I proposed to my friend that I believed society became unhinged from Truth when my parents were of the last generation, that in the majority, took their children to churches on Sunday. An older friend added his memory and belief that it began earlier when men came back from war, hardened and distant from religion, being demoralized by the prolongation of war.
So, IS There Truth?
If there is truth, and though we have buried it, it will rise again if we but seek for it hiding within things we already know and believe. There is a saying that is readily understood, “What goes around comes around”. Another way of saying the same thing is what you put out there will come back to you. Even prisoners in prison knows that you can’t do something without it coming back at you. This same truth has been know for thousands of years. We see evidence of it in the Bible where it say “Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days”. (Ecclesiastes 11:1) This is how we know Truth, what is true today will be true forever.
There is another Truth that if you do good, good will go out from you, like the ripple of water go out from a stone thrown in a pond. That is the story of the movie “Pay it Forward”.
The Truth shall set you free because if you adhere to it, you will no longer be tossed to and fro by error. You no longer have to wonder if you are doing the right thing if you stay on Truths course. You can stand securely on the rock of Truth.
The Truth of Power
I could go on with the many Truths, but for brevity I will only touch on one more Truth as it pertains to us and our freedom, and our freedoms; a statement by Lord Acton of Great Britain. Many of us remember it as “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. I believe that it is a clarion call for us to be on guard of our politicians, and leery in our trust of anyone that has power. This is a message of Truth that we have forgotten, and we have done so at our peril. Politics has gotten far out of hand when the People have grown in fear their governments. Of this Thomas Jefferson said “When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty.” There is actually more of Lord Acton’s quote than is normally quoted. Here is his exact quote, only with the attachment of a clearer and stronger warning “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men”. We MUST be on guard not to be foolish and lazy, it can be very dangerous to our freedom.
A tyrant may not grow out of one generation, but politics evolves and moves in one direction or another. We may not suffer from our own neglect but it is certain that someone will. If we let power move from the People, a future generation may not be strong enough to stand up the scoundrels; after all we will have taught them to remain quiet. We might be the cause of harm for future generations if we are too lazy or complacent to do our part to keep them free. This is why, on my blog I have the saying “Will the wild bird sing as sweetly when it is confined in a cage?” What will be the lot of our posterity be if they are not free? They will curse us that we did not protect them.
One last thought, being free, freedom is a spiritual condition.
I finish my post with a You Tube clip. I apologize to Canadian readers for the American content; sadly I do not find anyone very inspiring in Canadian politics. To my sight there is no one on the Canadian horizon that has a thread of stateman/statewoman in them. Where is the spark of freedom stirring in any Canadian politician? I hope that in viewing this You Tube clip, you will feel the Truth distill in you as you hear men of passion speak Truths we need to feel within ourselves. Please read the quotes in the clip as much as you listen to the audio. Think of what President Kennedy spoke in context of the revaluations of Edward Snowden.
And please put this article out to your friends on Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms. Truth will be no good to us if we know it alone and if it does not come to influence our politicians.
