We are 1 day from Christmas eve and the stores are rife with Christmas shopper out to make the perfect Christmas purchases; indeed we are living in parallel Christmases. I am a Christian and therefore I am acutely aware that the reason for the season is a birthday celebration of Jesus Christ, whom Christians revere as the Savior of the World.
But what is the other celebration? the one that empties bank accounts and brings some to bankruptcy’s door. It is clear that any celebration that is based on consumerism is not in the spirit of the season, but is the season of 1% enrichment. The Multinational Corporations have the Western mind tightly within their grasp and they have not let the Western consumer forget that to show love and care you have to spend money, and plenty of it. Lets face it, we are consumers first and it is so ingrained into our minds, the flash and fury of commercials, the glitz of the products in anywhere from supermarkets to malls will have us handing over our well earned dollars.
To unravel the consumer mind we must see and understand consumerism purely as materialism at it’s best and to be sure, it does not, in any way resemble spiritual values. The 3 Wise-men gave gifts to the Christ-child with the purpose of allowing Joseph and Mary to escape into Egypt to escape Herod’s awful decree.
So, before you send your hard earned cash off to some 1% bank vault consider your motives of your actions. Would Christ prefer you engage in wanton pseudo love purchases, or would He rather have you do good for someone you know, or someone you don’t know; someone that is His child.
Which Christmas do you celebrate?
