I have grown organic vegatables for many years because I knew that our soil today is depleted of minerals. So, as a help to other gardeners, I began writing about gardening, the things I researched, online, and in -part the things I have learned from the many lay-science experiments I worked on in the years of gardening.

Here is the surprising and frightening thing that I discovered in my research: click on the link to find a US Senate report from 1936; found at

U.S. Senate Report: Soil Depleted, 99% of Americans Nutrient Deficient

Senate Document 264 of the 74th Congress, 2nd Session 1936,
were found in the March 1936 issue of Cosmopolitan:

Do you know that most of us today are suffering from certain dangerous diet deficiencies which cannot be remedied until the depleted soils from which our foods come are brought into proper mineral balance? The alarming fact is that foods–fruits and vegetables and grains–now being raised on millions of acres of land that no longer contains enough of certain needed minerals, are starving us–no matter how much of them we eat!”

“We know that vitamins are complex chemical substances which are indispensable to nutrition, and that each of them is important for the normal function of some special structure of the body. Disorder and disease result from any vitamin deficiency. It is not commonly realized, however, that vitamins control the body’s appropriation of minerals, and that in the absence of minerals they have no function to perform. Lacking vitamins, the system can make some use of minerals, but lacking minerals, vitamins are useless.”

Laboratory tests prove that the fruits, vegetables, grains, eggs and even the milk and meats of today are not what they were a few generations ago. No man of today can eat enough fruits and vegetables to supply his system with the mineral salts he requires for perfect health….”

“It is bad news to learn from our leading authorities that 99 percent of the American people are deficient in these minerals, and that a marked deficiency in any one of the more important minerals actually results in disease. Any upset of the balance, any considerable lack of one or another element, however microscopic the body requirement may be, and we sicken, suffer, shorten our lives.”
(End of Report)

It is frightening, if you think about it, that if our health is totally reliant on the minerals and vitamins that plant give us, if the soil does not have the minerals our bodies need, we are exposed to the possibility of poor health – this explains the explosion of Cancer in our world today.

I wondered if cancer rates had risen in the last 100 years or so and this is what I found; a great blog of research from: Cancer rates 1900 to 2000 and beyond http://intuitivefred888.blogspot.ca/2011/03/cancer-rates-1900-to-2000-and-beyond.html\
I was interested in cancer rates from 1900 until the present and this is part of what I found. I was trying to see if radiation from nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants increased cancer rates but if I am to believe the following rates it had more to do with two other factors. First when people lived longer (past 40 to 60) they got more cancer from living longer. For example, many less people died from senile dementia or Alzheimers before 1950 because most people died before age 60. 2nd it appears increased cancer rates appear to be caused more by processed foods than any other single cause. If I follow this logic fast foods should greatly increase cancers over the next 20 to 50 years as people who have eaten it all their lives get into their 70s to 90s and above. Begin quotes:

100 years of cancer history
from an email I received:

I just read that scientists worldwide will be looking for genetic mutations (i.e.: DNA “mistakes”) associated with cancer.

What a waste of time and money. We already have the answer to 99% of cancer. It’s all in what we put in our mouths, which creates a toxic environment for cancer to grow and thrive. Simple.

If you doubt what I’m saying, take a quick look at the last 100 years of US history:

The year 1900: Cancer caused only 3 out 100 deaths in the US. Breast cancer was basically unheard of.

– Food manufacturers began developing “better living through chemistry” products like artificial sweeteners (saccharin), taste additives (MSG), partially hydrogenated vegetable shortening and margarine.

– Refined white sugar (acid and fat on a spoon) replaced molasses as the leading sweetener in the American diet.

1911: A grain-milling process was discovered that strips away the germ and outer layers of wheat grain (where the nutrients are). The result: Nutrient-poor, acid-creating white bread and refined white flour.

1921: General Mills invented a character named Betty Crocker to convince Americans to eat more processed foods (and increase the company’s stock value).

1935: Only one case of cancer had been reported in the last 50 years by the Inuit (Eskimo) people of Alaska and Canada. After they began eating processed foods, their cancer rate exploded until it equaled that of the US by the 1970?s.

1938: From now until 1990, the average male sperm count will drop by nearly half, and testicular cancer will triple.

1949: After being unheard of 49 years ago, the breast cancer rate is now 58 out of every 100,000 women.

1950: From now to the year 2000, the overall cancer rate will go up 55%. (Lung cancer due to smoking is only 1/4 of that.) Breast and colon cancer will go up 60%, brain cancer 80% and childhood cancer will increase 20%.

1970: Americans spend $6 billion on fast food. By 2001, that will skyrocket to $110 billion.

1971: The US Congress declares its “War on Cancer” which has done virtually nothing to stop the growing rates of cancer in the US in the next 30+ years.

– The US Department of Agriculture wrote “An Evaluation of Research in the US on Human Nutrition; Report No. 2,Benefits From Nutrition Research” which blamed the lack of nutrients in the American diet for most major health problems. That report was banned from public view for 21 years, reportedly at the insistence of the processed food industry.

1973: From now to 1991, prostate cancer will go up 126%.

1982: Teenage boys drink twice as much milk as soda. By

2002, they will be drinking twice as much soda as milk.

1990: From now to 2005, over 120,000 new processed foods will be developed to join the 320,000 processed foods already on the store shelves.

2000: Cancer is now the cause of 20 out of 100 of all deaths in the US, compared to just 3 out of 100 in 1900.

2001: Americans spend $110 billion a year on fast food. Every single day, 1 out of 4 Americans eats at least one meal in a fast food restaurant.

2005: Breast cancer, which was extremely rare back in 1900 and only affected 58 out of 100,000 women in 1949, now strikes 1 in 3 women in the US. That means that in just 55 short years, it has gone up 568 times what it was. Scary. Must be a virus, huh? Or our DNA has changed a lot, huh? Momma Mia…

History speaks for itself. If you want to be alive into your golden years and stay pain and disease-free, stay the hell away from processed foods of any kind. That includes boxed, bagged, canned or jarred foods, fast food, soda and bottled sweetened drinks.

Jack La Lanne (who is 93, but looks about 70) has an easy rule. Here it is: “If man made it, don’t eat it.”

A final note: if you have made a New Year Resolution to truely eat better, perhaps you’re going to have to grow your own food, or find someone who does and who also feeds their soil. Simply growing food on a dying soil will not give you all the nutrients that your body needs to stay well. Being a gardener from a long time back, I have found that there are simple way to put nutrient back into your soil, and they all come under the category of feeding the soil. The easiest way to feed your soil is by putting compose material back into the soil. If we follow the lead of nature, all we need to do is to gather the leaves my people foolishly rid themselves of in the fall and incorporate them into the soil right after harvest.

If you are wise  you will make a small wire enclosure to put your leaves into and then run your lawnmower over the leaves to chew the leaves up. The 30″ fence will keep your leaves in the enclosure while the leaves are shredded to very small pieces. This degrading the leaves to small pieces help nature break down the leaves quicker.

After you have cleaned the garden of weeds, spread a 2″ layer of leaves on the top of the soil and then plow the leaves into the soil. Because of the leaves being under the soil, the leaves will begin to be digested by the soil and you will not find any trace of the leaves in the soil. The only evidence there will be of the leaves being put into the soil will be that the soil will be slightly darker than that of the soil that has not had leaves added.

You have discovered the way nature has built the soil for thousands of years, only you were smart enough to help nature along. Trees have always been part of this natural process inasmuch as the roots of trees have always stretched deep into the soil to gather the trace minerals that are becoming scarace in the topsoil, and then the trees dump the contents of those minerals on the top of the soil in the form of leaves. By this method you can replenish your soil and your health by providing the nutrients your soil needs. One gardeners method of good health was to feed the soil and the soil fed her. Wisdom often comes with unnoticed simplicity.

About pushinback

Back in 1993, I attended an anti-Nafta rally in Ottawa along with over 110,000 others. But despite the overwhelming opposition to NAFTA, the steamroller rolled on. It was there that I came to understand the one vital thing that I have been preaching ever since. There are so many issues, and so many fighting each issue, we are all spinning our wheels, and wasting our time, talents and energy, because each election, we give the politicians our power and so the deck is stacked against us. I said it that day and I say it with more fervency today. We all have one issue that we share, and we should all stop fighting for our own issues and losing anyways, and we should fight to achieve that one thing that we all share. We Canadians all have to fight to finally get a say between elections. We need to fight to make politicians accountable to us, the people. If there is no accountability, and the people have no say between elections, we have no Democracy. My Blog is written to teach the reader the essential knowledge of freedom and Democracy. Please read, and learn. I am one person, but I leave you my witness that one person is not powerless, only first you must first learn and then act. Let the democratic revolution begin. Kindest regards, Rob McQueen

  1. Jeannette says:

If you have a camp fire save all the ashes from burrning the wood. Pioneers used the ashes from their wood burning stoves and threw it on their garden soils. The ashes left from burning the wood are full of the minerals from the tree. This is why the pioneers were healthier than we are they used their ashes for minerals, food for their plants. With the new heating systems no one knew to save the ashes for our gardens thus the sicker people became. We need the ashes from the wood to feed our soils which thus feeds us!

If you don’t camp to burn wood some of the parks have areas where they deposit the ashes from camp fires take your buckets and shovels and fill up your buckets of cold ashes for your gardens even conservations have large concrete cylinders where the campers deposit their campfire ashes. Help yourself to all the free ashes.
